Ayurveda is a very ancient and traditional system of healing. The incredible thing is that it has still not lost its popularity. The ancient wisdom and healing techniques of this traditional system of medicine has still not been explored completely.
Ayurvedic texts are an extraordinary source of nature based medicines and the relationship of the human body constitution with the nature and the elements of the universe. Encompassing such a vast body of knowledge, these are no doubt that this healing system will continue to flourish in years to come.
How much do you know about Ayurveda? Have you ever wondered how Ayurveda came into existence?
According to Hindu mythology, Ayurveda had originated as a ray of enlightenment in the cosmic consciousness of Brahma – the creator of the Universe. Lord Brahma composed eight branches of Ayurveda containing hundred thousand verses in a thousand chapters.
He then imparted the knowledge of health and life, i.e. Ayurveda to one of his sons, Daksha Prajapati. Daksha passed down the teachings of Ayurveda to the twin Vedic gods known as Ashwini Kumaras. Ashwini Kumaras are the twin Vedic gods who then became the physicians of the gods, and the Devas of Ayurveda. The Aswins then imparted their knowledge to Indra, the king of Gods.
While all this happened in the heavens, humans continued to be plagued by illnesses and pains. Many great sages meditated upon remedies for the painful human maladies but it was all in vain. It was then that Indra passed his teachings to his physicians, namely Acharya Bharadwaj, Kashyapa and Dhanvantari.
Acharya Bharadwaj taught his student Agnivesha who then wrote the fundamental Ayurvedic text of internal medicine. Acharya Charak, who was a disciple of Acharya Agnivesh, then revised this body of work. Thus began tradition of passing down the knowledge of Ayurveda from the gods to sages. Ayurveda is thus believed to have descended from the skies to the earth to alleviate suffering on the mortal plane.
